Ideally, once you begin benchmarking you can track your progress overtime, again and again, redesign through redesign. It's an ongoing practice. Essentially, benchmarking involves collecting quantitative data that describes the experiences.

For example: We can collect any of the following UX Metrics.
✅ Average time to make a purchase
✅ No of clicks on CTA Buttons
✅ Success rate for a task completion
✅ Average ease-of-use rating for creating an account

When to conduct Benchmarking:

Qualitative Usability testing can be very expensive and time intensive, so it's up to your team to decide to perform benchmarking study once per year. Analytics can be much quicker for collecting benchmarking metrics, you can also conduct after each major redesign.
